Saginaw Township Fire Department recently responded to a car - pole accident that dropped an energized electrical wire across a state highway. While checking the damaged vehicle, crews noticed that the drivers side airbag had failed to deploy. Possible causes for the failure range from a mechanical malfunction, to an improper or fraudulent repair from an earlier collision. Regardless of the cause, responders need to assume that the air bag could activate at any time and keep clear of the path of deployment. Disconnect the battery and wait until the capacitor has lost its charge. Remember that capacitor discharge time can vary from several seconds to thirty minutes depending on the make, model and year of the vehicle.
