We don't get many opportunities to conduct live fire trainings, so when the owner of a century old farmhouse in a rural corner of our township offered the building to us, we jumped at the chance. On training day, our inexperienced firefighters got the chance to practice scene size-up, ventilation, and extinguish several room and contents fires.
At the end of the day, a fire was started and allowed to burn. I walked around the old house taking pictures as the fire spread and intensified. By a window, the glass broken from the heat, I was mesmerized as the fire slowly boiled inside the room. It wasn't until later, as I reviewed the digital photos, that I saw the demon that had lurked in the flames.
It is said that the camera can see things the eye cannot. Now I know that is true.
